Episode 14: Patrick's Top 5 Backcountry Fishing Lures

In this episode, Patrick dives into the essentials for backcountry fishing, particularly when targeting high-elevation trout species like grayling and brook trout. He shares his top 5 lures that should be in every angler's pack, along with detailed tips on how to use each effectively.

Top 5 Lures for Backcountry Trout Fishing:

  1. Flies – Dry flies, bead-headed flies, streamers, and more are essential for catching both trout and grayling. Pro tip: you can cast them far using an A-just-a Bubble.
  2. Spinners – The Panther Martin (gold blade, black/yellow body) leads Patrick’s spinner lineup, followed by Blue Fox Vibrax and Rooster Tails. These lures excel in both deep and skinny water.
  3. Spoons – Featuring PK Lures’ Flutterfish and PK Spoon, these lures allow you to fish the entire water column. Be sure to have gold, nickel, and copper-colored options.
  4. Crankbaits – Suspended crankbaits like the PK Ridge Rattler or Rapala X Rap work wonders in mountain lakes with piscivorous trout.
  5. Marabou Jig – Patrick’s personal favorite. The marabou jig’s lifelike motion is versatile, effective, and affordable, making it a must-have for rivers, lakes, and more.
